In-line Hockey
The Game
The game of In-line hockey is similar to ice hockey, the main differences being In-line hockey is a non-contact sport, the type of skates used (wheels not blades) and the puck (it has holes in it). The aim of the game is to score as many goals as possible in the opposition goal.
A team has four players and one goalie on the rink at any one time, but due to the speed of the game and the energy required frequent player substitutions are made from the bench during the game. A game runs for four ten minute periods.
Equipment
An In-line hockey skater needs; skates, shin knees, padded pants, over pants, elbow pads, gloves, helmet and a stick.
The Nelson Whalers
In-line hockey started in Nelson in 1996, with the rules and guidelines having been developed over the years. Currently the Whalers have teams in U10's, U12's, U14's, Women, and Senior Men. If and when we have the numbers we can have teams in U'16's and U18's too.

Tuesday 4.30 – 5.30pm U10's, U12’s and novice players

Tuesday 7.00 – 9.30pm Seniors (U16’s and above)
Wednesday 7.30 - 9.00pm Secondary Schools
Sunday 11.00 – 12.00pm Learn to Blade

Learn to Blade
Ideally before you can play in-line hockey you need to be able to skate and we run Learn to Blade classes on Sunday mornings from 11.00 to 12.ooam during school terms. Just turn up, $5 per person including skate hire or $40 per person per term.
In-line hockey in New Zealand
The New Zealand In-line Hockey Association Inc (NZIHA) was formed in August 1995. It is affiliated to the New Zealand Ice Hockey Federation (NZIHF) and through the NZIHF to the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). The NZIHA is also affiliated to the New Zealand Federation of Roller Sports (NZFRS) and through the NZFRS to the International Federation of Roller Sports (IFRS). Sport & Recreation NZ recognises the NZFRS as the national sports body responsible for all roller sports including in-line hockey.
The NZIHA hosts a National competition annually, with teams around the country playing qualifying games to earn a place as one of the final teams to play at Nationals.
